Champagne Supernovice – 2022
A little context…
I spent a fair amount of the mid-90s going to model homes with my folks. We lived in Elk Grove, CA at the time and it was rapidly expanding so that may have been it. Also, my dad (and I) likes houses, homes, architechure, furniture, landscape design, shopping. Looking at model homes tick off a lot of those boxes.
There are fond memories seeking out “the kids room” in each of the homes. The nicer developments would have the option of a bonus/playroom. Don’t even get me started on a loft! Just an extra space to watch TV in that isn’t the main room and has some privacy but no so much that your family forgets about you? Yes please! All the TVs and computers were plastic. The last house we lived in backed up to a new development and I used to ride my bike through the wooden frames…skeletons of the suburbs…deep man.
Hercules doesn’t have any new residential developments in the works and Belgian Husband doesn’t share my desire to walk around a house we aren’t going to live in, so trolling Pinterest deep into the night until my phone falls on my face, is how I roll now.
Architecture and Design
I am a sucker for Mid-Century Modern. Something long and spread out with a fucking atrium in the foyer. Or a Ranch Style, open with big windows that lead to the backyard, indoor/outdoor living. I’d be happy with something Victorian too. Each room is closed off and all that wood. Belgian Husband is a fan of anything two story and mediterranean style. I agree that you can get more square footage with a two story house especially in the ‘burbs but I’m over walking The Toddler up and down the stairs. Oh, and I will squeal at a Storybook Tudor but those are too small for our family of three.
In my life right now I need 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and at least 2300 square feet. I really want an island in the kitchen and those glass doors that open allllll they way across the wall. Yes, I love “Open Concept.” The kitchen and the family room should blend into each other. The living room is for fancy guests and Christmas so that can be somewhat enclosed. MY bathroom needs a soaking tub and a vanity so I can sit and put on my mascara like Kyle Richards. And some type of bar area. Oh, the Main Bedroom needs to be on the OPPOSITE side of the house from the other bedrooms.
Let’s Troll Pinterest for Some Floor Plans!
Starting off easy with this one. Island that looks over the family room so I can watch TV while I cook. Check. We've got your wetbar AND the main bedroom is on the opposite side of the house from the others. And I'm pretty sure it has one of those all the way open sliding door things. I do miss the living room. Where are fancy guests supposed to sit? And the pool will not be a concept, it will be a reality.
I'm calling this one Home Alone Chic. Everything is always so square or rectangular so I dig the curvy staircase and circular loft that is adjacent to the guest rooms that are on the other side of the ROTUNDA from the main bedroom. Yes, you read that right. A rotunda, in a residence. There is a living room, a den, and 4 damn bedrooms. I almost forgot it didn't have those cool all the way sliding glass door things. I'd live here if we lived in the suburbs of Chicago.
I dig all the hallway action in this one. It has a lot of neat things that I wouldn't put at the top of my list but now that I know they exist there is no going back. Who doesn't want to drive their 2016 Volvo X90 through a stunning porte cochere'? I would learn how to grill properly if I had access to that outdoor kitchen on a daily basis. The guest bedroom/bathroom situation was kind of lame but the closet in the main bedroom HAS AN ISLAND.
This one is just, Mwah, chef's kiss. I think I'm done with the post and house hunting/day dreaming/trolling. I don't know exactly what a "Morning Bar" is but I assume it's something that makes it easier for me to drink champagne in bed. Actually, we'll drink champagne in the sitting area adjacent to my bed, that's less depressing. Please note the 3 car garage AND the 2 car garage. Now I'll finally have room to store all the holiday decorations I want to buy for EVERY holiday.
This one is almost too fancy and too perfect. It has a pool, hella bedrooms, fun bathroom, kitchen islands, main bedroom on the other side of the house. Plus it has an outdoor shower off the main bedroom, an outdoor kitchen, a study, a game room and a private courtyard. Also, the shower in the main bathroom can be entered from both sides.
I am sensing a theme. Hella bedrooms, a pool, luxury main bathrooms and porticos! Notice there are no barndominiums…that was on purpose. I don’t like barndominiums.
